Life Legacy


Paul B. Zieren, age 97 of Carlyle, died on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at his residence in Carlyle. Paul was born on September 6, 1912, in Carlyle, Illinois, a son of Ben and Elizabeth (Hahn) Zieren. He married Nelda Menestrina on February 12, 1944, at Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago, and she preceded him in death on June 28, 2007.

Paul is survived by 2 daughters, Judy Shaver and husband Larry of Breese and Julie Wooters and husband David of Brentwood, Tennessee; a son, John Zieren and wife Nancy of Carlyle; 3 grandsons, Brad (Joelle) Zieren of Chesterfield, Missouri, Andrew (Michelle) of Carlyle, and Adam (Lisa) Zieren of Leawood, Kansas; 3 granddaughters, Jennifer and Kelly Wooters of Brentwood, Tennessee and Erin Wooters of Hong Kong; 3 great grandchildren, Maya, Lauren, and Jonathan Zieren; and a sister, Mary Hovlid of Sun City, Arizona.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by 4 sisters, Betty Nagel, Marge Brefeld, Virginia Ziegler and Josephine Tschudy.

Paul graduated from the Hohenschuh-Carpenter School of Embalming in St. Louis in 1935 and operated Zieren Furniture and Undertaking in Carlyle with his father. He closed the businesses in 1942 to enlist in the U.S. Navy, serving as a Pharmacist Mate in the South Pacific. After his discharge in 1945, he reopened Zieren Furniture Company, and in 1948 formed a partnership to open Zieren-Day Funeral Home. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle, VFW Post 3523, and an 80 year member of Knights of Columbus Council 1382 in Carlyle –and was the longest tenured member. Paul was an avid lover of nature. He enjoyed his clubhouse, growing flowers and keeping bees. He worked until the age of 90 and enjoyed his many friends and family. Education was very important to Paul and he encouraged learning in all young people he knew.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday at St. Mary Church in Carlyle, with Fr. George Mauck as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, with military honors by the U.S. Navy. Friends may call at Zieren Day Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00-8:00 P.M. and on Saturday from 8:00-9:30 A.M.
