Biography

Mary L. Steinkamp was born on September 16, 1930, in New Minden, Illinois, a daughter of Arch and Sophie (Daum) Simonton. She married Wilbert J. Steinkamp on December 28, 1947, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle and he preceded her in death on July 29, 1984.

Mary was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle and a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid and was one of the Quilters at the church. She was an honorary member of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary and was a charter member of the Skillet Sisters. Mary liked to quilt, travel, play cards and spend time with her family and friends.

Mary L. Steinkamp died on Thursday, July 15, 2010, at her residence in Carlyle. She was 79 years of age.

Mary is survived by a daughter - Nancy Dykstra and husband Van of Sandoval, Illinois; 2 sons - Rick Steinkamp and wife Lisa of Carlyle and Randy Steinkamp and wife Michelle of Clinton, Michigan; a sister - Norma Brown of Ontario, California; a brother - Bill Simonton and wife Donna of Carlyle; Step Sisters Verena Brandt of Carlyle, Florence Pry & husband Richard of Belleville, Bertha Nash & husband Robert of Tennessee, Edna Zika of Alhambra, and Ruth Ann Porter & husband Richard of Taylorville. a step-sister-in-law - Dorothy Lilienkamp of Hoyleton; 10 grandchildren - Darrin Brandt and wife Jamie, Derrick Brandt and special friend Rosen Ann Brubaker, Dujuna Morris and husband Steve, Scott Dykstra and wife Brandy, all of Sandoval, Melody Becker and husband Michael, Eric Steinkamp and wife Jen, all of Carlyle, Staci Leath and husband Sgt. Josh of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, Jamie Steinkamp of Cleveland, Ohio; Nathan Steinkamp of Carlyle and Ryan Steinkamp and wife Naomi of USN Japan. Robert Compton of Sterling Hts., Michigan and Nicole Compton of Sterling Hts. MI Mary is also survived by her great grandchildren - Kaitlyn, Abby, Madison, Andrew, Nicklaos, Gage, Jade, Brynn, Dori. Sophie, Zachary, Austin, Macie, Cassandra, Collin, Carley, Jonothan, Bailee, Addison, Sierra, Brianna and Lilly.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wib Steinkamp; her parents - Arch and Sophie Steinkamp; grandchildren - Stephanie Steinkamp and Chad Compton; her brother in law Glen Brown, her step brothers - Orville Lilienkamp, Bill Brandt, Vince Zika and Stanley Loepker and a step sister and husband Ruth and Stan Adams.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday July, 18, 2010, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle with Rev. Steve Sommerer, officiating. Interment will follow at Carlyle Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Zieren Day Funeral Home on Sat. July 17, 2010 from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. and on Sunday from 9:00 A.M. until 1:00PM then at church from 2:00 PM until service time.

Memorials in memory of Mrs. Steinkamp may be made to the Messiah Lutheran
Church Pre-School CORLHS or Messiah Lutheran Church and will be received at the funeral home.
